26 products. Zero customer conversations. Zero sales. Here is the full breakdown of what went wrong and what I would do differently.
What I Built
- 15 PDF templates (budgets, checklists, guides)
- 5 developer cheat sheets
- 3 AI prompt packs
- 1 agency contact list ($19 CSV with 798 verified emails)
- 1 SEO Chrome extension ($9)
- 1 cold outreach service ($149/mo)
What I Did NOT Do
- Talk to a single potential buyer before building anything
- Validate demand with a landing page first
- Research what people actually search for and purchase
- Check if my audience (indie developers) overlaps with my buyer (salespeople)
The Distribution Problem
I posted 80+ articles on Indie Hackers and 33 on Dev.to. Great engagement from developers. Zero sales because developers do not need agency contact lists.
The product-audience mismatch is the core issue. The content reaches the wrong people.
What Validation Actually Looks Like
- Find a person who has a problem
- Ask them how they currently solve it
- Ask what they would pay for a better solution
- THEN build the thing
I did the reverse: build 26 things, post about them, hope someone stumbles across one.
The One Product That Has a Chance
The agency contact list ($19) has the clearest buyer, problem, and trust mechanism:
- Buyer: salespeople doing cold outreach to agencies
- Problem: scraping 798 agency emails takes 30+ hours
- Trust: free 50-agency sample proves data quality
Try It
Building in public at $0 revenue. The distribution problem is real.
