🌱 Meet GardenBuddy AI — Your Personal AI Gardening Companion

What if choosing the right plant was as simple as answering a few questions?

Most beginners don't struggle because they don't want to care for plants. They struggle because they don't know which plants suit their environment, how to start, or what to do every day.

So I built GardenBuddy AI — an AI-powered gardening companion that turns personal preferences into actionable plant recommendations and a seven-day care plan.

🌐 Live Application: https://garden-buddy-nine.vercel.app/

🌿 What Does GardenBuddy AI Do?

GardenBuddy follows a simple workflow:

Your Space → AI Recommendations → Plant Selection → 7-Day Care Plan → Progress Tracking

Here's how it works:

Tell GardenBuddy about your space. Enter your city, available space, sunlight exposure, gardening experience, goals, and daily time budget.

Get three AI-powered plant recommendations. Each includes suitability reasoning, care needs, sunlight requirements, and useful caveats.

Choose your plant. Select the recommendation you want to grow.

Generate a personalized seven-day care plan. The application creates practical, day-by-day activities specific to your selected plant.

Track your progress. Complete tasks, undo actions, edit care instructions, and return to your saved garden.

The goal is to move beyond AI-generated suggestions and help users actually follow through.

🧠 Behind the Scenes — Engineering Architecture

I built GardenBuddy using a lightweight full-stack architecture.

Frontend

React + Vite

TypeScript

Responsive UI

React Router

Backend

Node.js + Express

API request validation

Error handling and rate limiting

Groq API integration

AI Layer

Groq-hosted language model

Structured plant recommendations

Personalized care-plan generation

Server-side validation of AI responses

Persistence

Browser localStorage

Saved preferences and garden progress

Task completion history

Versioned care plans

Deployment

Vercel — Frontend

Render — Backend

One important engineering decision was to keep the Groq API key exclusively on the backend. AI responses are validated before they're used, rather than assuming generated JSON will always match the application's requirements.

⚙️ What Made This More Than a Simple AI Wrapper?

The interesting part wasn't only connecting to an LLM.

It was designing a reliable workflow around unpredictable AI outputs.

For example, a seven-day care plan is only useful when every required day is present and tasks follow a consistent structure.

Similarly, regenerating a plan shouldn't accidentally erase a user's existing progress.

GardenBuddy addresses these concerns through structured validation, plan versioning, guarded regeneration, and client-side state persistence.

And because gardening recommendations depend on real-world conditions, city-based suggestions are presented with appropriate uncertainty rather than pretending the AI knows the exact weather or soil conditions.

🚀 What I Learned

Building GardenBuddy reinforced an important product engineering principle:

AI generates intelligence. Good software engineering turns that intelligence into a reliable user experience.

A useful AI product needs more than a prompt and an API call. It needs validation, state management, error recovery, thoughtful UX, and clearly defined boundaries.

I'd love feedback from the DEV community.

If you were building an AI gardening assistant, what would you add next — weather-aware care plans, plant health diagnosis, or automated reminders?

Let's discuss! 🌿

Built with React, TypeScript, Express, Groq AI, Vercel, and Render.
