Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 2: Side Hustle Submission 💸

This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 2: Side Hustle

What I Built

I built BizStudy AI, a multi-agent productivity tool powered entirely by Gemma 2 running locally. It serves two distinct, high-value side-hustle tracks designed to save time and optimize daily workflows:

  1. The AI Study Planner: Tailored for students and freelance learners. Users input their syllabus, exam dates, and daily available hours, and the app generates a highly structured, dynamically adjusting weekly study calendar.
  2. The Shopkeeper Assistant: Tailored for local micro-business owners and shopkeepers. It tracks basic inventory levels and automatically drafts hyper-localized, SEO-optimized text for WhatsApp broadcast marketing and Facebook marketplace listings based on current stock.

Local retailers and students would pay a small monthly subscription for this tool because it offers tailored organization and automated marketing without expensive corporate platform fees or privacy violations.

How I Built It

The application is engineered with an emphasis on local privacy and decentralized AI execution:

  • Core Model: Gemma 2 (9B), chosen for its exceptional reasoning, structured output compliance, and lightweight hardware footprint.
  • Orchestration Framework: LangChain, used to build distinct agent structures for both the scheduling logic and the marketing copywriter pipeline.
  • Local Inference Environment: Ollama, allowing the entire application stack to run seamlessly offline on standard laptop hardware.
  • Frontend UI: Streamlit, enabling a rapid, intuitive dashboard interface for data entry and schedule visualization.

Why Does Open Innovation Matter?

Open innovation was foundational to making BizStudy AI viable as a local side hustle. Relying on closed, commercial APIs creates variable cost structures that scale aggressively with usage—making it unaffordable for local shopkeepers and students.

By utilizing Gemma 2 via Ollama, the operational cost drops to zero. More importantly, open innovation guarantees absolute data privacy. Shopkeepers do not have to upload proprietary inventory sheets, and students do not have to expose personal calendar data to external corporate servers. Everything is processed locally on the user's physical machine.

My First User

I gave the prototype to a local grocery store owner to test the marketing broadcast features. They provided feedback stating that generating localized promotional blurbs in seconds dramatically reduced the time they spent managing customer community groups. They noted they would gladly pay a fixed nominal software fee if it saved them hours of manual writing every weekend.
