Flutter + NVIDIA Jetson: Binary Telemetry Without UI Bottlenecks
Verbose JSON for every high-rate sensor sample can waste bandwidth and CPU. A binary protocol may help, but only when schema versioning, diagnostics, and tooling are designed deliberately.
Separate control from bulk data
Use a small reliable command channel for actions and acknowledgements. Keep telemetry and image/video streams separate with their own rate limits and loss policies.
Choose a schema
Protocol Buffers, FlatBuffers, or a versioned custom format can reduce overhead. Include schema version, sequence number, timestamp semantics, units, and validity flags.
Parse away from rendering
Convert bytes into immutable domain objects before publishing UI state. For expensive decoding, consider an isolate or native layer, then publish only the latest useful snapshot.
Bound memory under bursts
Cap message size and queue depth. Coalesce replaceable snapshots when consumers fall behind, but never silently drop safety-critical commands.
Benchmark the whole path
Measure bytes per second, decode time, allocations, garbage-collection pauses, and displayed data age on actual hardware.
Example implementation
This Dart snippet illustrates one part of the design. Adapt types, transport behavior, timestamp semantics, and platform APIs to your actual system before production use.
class LatestValue<T> {
T? _value;
void add(T value) => _value = value; // For replaceable snapshots only.
T? takeLatest() {
final result = _value;
_value = null;
return result;
}
}
Performance checklist
- Measure p95/p99 behavior on target hardware, not only a desktop simulator.
- Bound queues and buffers; define what may be coalesced or dropped.
- Keep heavy parsing, image processing, and inference away from the Flutter UI thread.
- Track source timestamps, sequence numbers, stale-data rate, and dropped updates.
- Test network degradation, reconnects, sustained operation, and resource pressure.
- Keep control commands and critical alerts separate from replaceable telemetry.
