Warehouse pick-to-light controllers need compact, repeatable Ethernet interfaces that survive frequent installation and maintenance work. The RJ45 jack footprint is therefore a mechanical and manufacturing decision as well as a layout task.
Use the approved drawing for the exact jack
Begin with the drawing for the actual RJ45 jack configuration. Verify the contact pattern, shell pads, locating features, board-edge position, and LED dimensions before placing any nearby components. Do not adapt a footprint from a similar-looking connector without comparing all of these details. A small change in shell tabs or LED pin positions can create unnecessary assembly and enclosure problems.
Maintain a practical board-edge keep-out
The board edge should give the plug body and cable boot adequate clearance. Check the intended enclosure opening, mounting bosses, and fasteners together with the PCB outline. Parts placed too close to the jack may block solder inspection or make it harder to remove a damaged controller during service. Leave room for normal tool access as well as for the connector itself.
Give shell pads their own space
The RJ45 shell and its mounting pads need a clearly defined area in the footprint. Avoid crowding that area with tall parts, test points, or mechanical hardware. During the PCB review, confirm that the pad sizes and surrounding keep-out are compatible with the selected assembly process. A stable shell installation helps the jack tolerate normal insertion and removal without relying only on the signal contacts.
Align LED windows during the mechanical review
If the RJ45 jack includes LEDs, review their location against the front-panel window early. Confirm the board position, panel thickness, and viewing angle using the actual enclosure geometry. A clearly visible status light makes warehouse troubleshooting quicker, especially when several similar controllers are mounted together.
A disciplined RJ45 jack footprint reduces late changes and supports repeatable controller builds. It gives the manufacturer clear assembly features and gives service teams an Ethernet port that remains easy to identify and use.
