Automated dispensing cabinets depend on reliable communication between the cabinet controller, site network and maintenance tools. The RJ45 female jack is the point where that connection becomes physical. It should be selected and positioned as part of the whole cabinet service path rather than as a generic PCB item added at the end of layout.
First, define who uses the port and when. A permanent network cable may enter from the rear, while a separate service connection is used only during installation or fault finding. Giving those connections different labels and locations reduces the chance that a technician disconnects the live network while searching for a diagnostic port. If the cabinet front is exposed to frequent cleaning or customer access, placing the service jack behind a controlled access panel may be preferable to leaving it open on the exterior.
Connector orientation affects the enclosure immediately. A right-angle RJ45 jack keeps the cable close to the PCB plane and is often useful where the controller is mounted near a rear wall. A vertical version directs the plug away from the board and can work well in an enclosure with available depth. In both cases, build a clearance envelope around the fully mated plug, including room for the latch release and the first section of cable bend.
Think about cable routing before the PCB is frozen. A cable should not cross a removable tray, cover a fuse label, or rub against sheet-metal edges. Add a tie point or cable guide so normal cabinet movement and service work do not repeatedly load the RJ45 jack. The route should also allow a replacement controller to be removed without cutting ties or disconnecting unrelated harnesses.
For mixed indoor conditions, choose an RJ45 female jack and enclosure arrangement appropriate for expected dust, cleaning practices and temperature range. Shielded connector options can be useful in cabinets with motors, pumps or other electrical equipment, but shielding needs a considered connection to the cabinet grounding scheme. Review it at system level instead of assuming the metal shell alone solves every noise problem.
Finally, validate the design with the actual panel, cable and access tool. A short service exercise—plug in, read the label, release the latch and remove the controller—gives a more meaningful result than checking dimensions in isolation. Good RJ45 jack placement reduces service time and protects the cabinet’s communication path throughout its operating life.
