Image Editing Workflows That Survive a Real Deadline

Generating a good image is the fun part. Shipping the fiftieth revision of it, on a Tuesday, is the job. Most of the pain in an AI image workflow is not model quality - it is versioning, consistency and knowing which edit broke what.

Keep the original, always edit a copy

Every generated image is a source file. Before you crop, extend, inpaint or upscale, duplicate it. That one habit makes an entire class of mistakes survivable, and it costs nothing until the day someone asks for "the version before the background change".

Name files so the history is readable: subject, variant, revision. hero-bottle-v3-clean-bg.png beats final_final2.png, and the difference only shows up when three people are working on the same folder.

Change one thing per edit

Inpainting rewards small, specific instructions:

  • Replace one object, keep lighting and shadow direction.
  • Extend the canvas on one side, then check the seam.
  • Remove an artifact, then zoom to the edge to confirm the texture matches.

Batching five edits into one prompt makes the result hard to attribute: when the composite looks wrong you cannot tell which change caused it.

Consistency across a set

Product shots and campaign visuals are judged as a set, not individually. Fix the variables before you start: same aspect ratio, same lighting description, same seed where the tool allows it. For character or product consistency, start from a reference image and let the model do only the edit. Then lay the set out on one screen and look for the one image that is subtly off - it is always visible side by side and invisible alone.

Resolution and export

Generate at working resolution, do the fine edits, then upscale last. Upscaling early bakes in artifacts you then have to clean at four times the pixel count. Check text and thin lines at 100% zoom before export; that is where interpolation shows up.

Quality control in one pass

  • Compare the edit against the original at 200% on the edge you touched.
  • Look at the image on a phone. Small screens expose busy backgrounds.
  • Check the file you exported, not the preview in the editor.

Tooling

For edits - text replacement, object removal, canvas extension - a studio that keeps generation and editing in the same place shortens the loop, for example Qwen-image-2.1. The model matters less than the loop: one change, one comparison, one export.

The rule

Duplicate before editing, change one thing, check the seam, upscale last. The workflow is boring, and boring is what ships.
