Nasdaq futures fell more than 2 percent on Friday after two earnings reports did the work. Amazon signalled that its AI spending boom is nowhere near over. Intel warned it expects to burn cash. Together they undercut the story investors had been paying for: that the heavy spending phase is ending and the payoff is starting.

It capped a brutal week. Alphabet reported 25 percent revenue growth on Wednesday, but search advertising slowed to 12 percent from 17 percent the quarter before, and the company reported negative free cash flow of 9.07 billion dollars. Shares fell about 8 percent on the day, and roughly 500 billion dollars of market value came off across the week.

Why this week was different

For three years the market paid for the story. More chips, more data centres, more capability, and the returns would follow. That trade worked while revenue was accelerating. This week it stopped working, because the companies spending the most also showed the thin part of the model: advertising growth slowing while cash goes out faster than it comes in.

The bond market tells the same story from the other side. Investors moved to safety, and government bonds are heading for their best month in nearly three years. When money leaves the growth trade and lands in treasuries, the market is not saying AI is finished. It is saying the bill arrived before the payoff.

What it means if you build with these tools

Three practical things, none of them abstract.

Cheap AI pricing is a temporary condition. The models are subsidised by investors who now want a return. Price rises tend to arrive a few quarters after weeks like this one, usually dressed up as new packaging rather than a straight increase.

Expect a harder sell on enterprise contracts. When capex is questioned, vendors push annual commitments and multi-year seats, because committed revenue is what makes the next earnings call look safe. Read the terms before you sign, especially the auto-renew clause and the per-seat minimum.

Check your provider exposure. If your product depends on one model provider, a price change or a policy change from that provider is not a theoretical risk when it is under this kind of pressure. An abstraction layer is boring work until the week it saves you.

The numbers that actually moved

  • Alphabet revenue: 127.6 billion dollars, up 25 percent year on year.
  • Search advertising growth: 12 percent, down from 17 percent in Q2 and 19 percent in Q1.
  • Alphabet free cash flow: negative 9.07 billion dollars for the quarter.
  • Capital spending: flat for 2026, with a significant increase expected in 2027.
  • Market reaction: roughly 500 billion dollars of Alphabet value gone across the week, Nasdaq futures down more than 2 percent on Friday, and bonds heading for their best month in nearly three years.

What a small team should do this month

Audit what you spend before the next renewal, not after. Our guide on finding every AI subscription you pay for is a 30 minute version of that.

Put a spending cap on every API key. Metered billing is where a quiet experiment turns into a line item nobody owns.

Keep one working alternative to your main provider, even if it is a free tier you rarely use. The point is that switching is a decision you can make in a day, not a project.

The counter-argument, fairly stated

It is possible this is a repricing rather than a reversal. Demand for AI capacity is genuinely enormous, and Google said its first-party model APIs now process nearly 32 billion tokens a minute, up 40 percent on the quarter. Companies do not consume 40 percent more of something they are abandoning.

The question is not whether usage grows. It is whether the spending required to serve that usage can be recovered at current prices, and for how long investors are willing to fund the gap.

What to watch next

Microsoft and the chip makers, and what they say about 2027 capital spending. If guidance keeps rising while advertising and cloud growth slow, this week becomes the template rather than the exception. For anyone paying for AI, the useful number to watch is not the index. It is the price on the plan page when you renew.
