The Deep-Sea Welder
Old Qin's welding torch threw white light into the eternal dark, 3,800 meters below the surface.
He was the resident welder on CNOOC's Deep Sea Platform Six. His job was simple to describe: when the underwater structure cracked, he went down and welded it. But 3,800 meters is no joke. The pressure could flatten steel. He worked inside a diving bell, in atmospheric diving suit, 400 kg pressing on every square centimeter of his body.
The welding torch was his hand. His actual hands gripped control levers inside the suit, and the mechanical claw outside held the welding rod. 0.3-second delay. He'd spent twelve years adapting to that delay.
That day, welding a 15-centimeter crack at the base of support B3, near the seabed, he saw something next to the crack.
A row of holes. Perfectly circular, evenly spaced. Seven per row, three rows. Like sockets.
The photos he sent up triggered a scientific vessel. The geology team determined the holes were "directional growth traces" — they had formed simultaneously with the rock layer, 200 million years ago. When there were no humans. When there was nothing that should have been making sockets.
Later, a spectrometer was lowered into the holes. Each one glowed at a frequency the instrument couldn't identify.
Old Qin asked about it. The dispatch said: "What holes?"
He stopped asking. He thought about the light — a frequency no human eye could see. Something had left twenty-one sockets in the seabed and waited 200 million years.
It was waiting for a different kind of eye.
