5 Firefox New Tab Extensions Compared: Which One Actually Improves Your Workflow?

When Firefox loads a new tab, you have about two seconds of attention before you navigate somewhere else.

Most default new tab pages waste those two seconds. So I compared the top five alternatives — and I'll give you my actual take on each.

What I tested

I installed and used each extension for at least a week:

  1. Tabliss — Free, open source, highly customizable
  2. nightTab — Beautiful dark themes, minimal setup
  3. Bonjourr — iOS-inspired, clean aesthetic
  4. Tabliss (again, different version) — Note: the "free version" misses key widgets
  5. Weather & Clock Dashboard — My own extension, built for zero-config use

To be transparent: I built option 5. I'm comparing the others fairly — if one of them is better for your use case, you should use it.

The comparison

Tabliss

Pros: Most customizable. Add any widgets you want, from background images to notes to weather. Huge community of custom configs shared on Reddit.
Cons: Requires setup time. Out of the box, it's beautiful but empty. You need to add widgets manually.
Best for: Users who want to configure their perfect setup once and keep it.

nightTab

Pros: Gorgeous dark themes. If aesthetics matter to you, nightTab is probably the winner.
Cons: No live weather widget (without external API keys). Setup is moderate.
Best for: Dark mode fans who want bookmarks + clock without weather.

Bonjourr

Pros: Works instantly out of the box. iOS-inspired design looks clean. Shows local time and a rotating background.
Cons: Weather requires location permission and API setup. World clocks are limited.
Best for: Users who want "something pretty that works immediately" without weather data.

Weather & Clock Dashboard

Pros: Live weather works immediately on install (no API key needed — uses Open-Meteo). Multiple world clocks built-in. Dark/light mode toggle. Loads in <100ms.
Cons: Less customizable than Tabliss. No custom backgrounds. The design is intentionally minimal.
Best for: Users who specifically want weather + time zones in their new tab without any setup.

My actual recommendation

If you want no-setup weather in your new tab: Weather & Clock Dashboard (that's mine — I'm biased, but it genuinely requires zero config).

If you want maximum customization: Tabliss.

If you care primarily about aesthetics: nightTab or Bonjourr.

The extension "market" for Firefox new tabs is surprisingly uncrowded. Most users are still using the default new tab page and haven't discovered any of these options.

All five extensions are free and available on the Firefox Add-Ons store. None collect personal data.

Which new tab extension do you use? Let me know in the comments.
