You know that feeling. It's 11pm, you've been deep in a research rabbit hole for hours — 20+ tabs open, half of them with notes you haven't saved yet — and Firefox crashes.
Or worse: you accidentally hit "Close all tabs."
I've been there more times than I care to admit. Here's what I do now.
The problem with Firefox sessions
Firefox tries to restore your session after a crash. But it's not reliable. If you restart your computer, clear your cache, or just open a fresh window by mistake — those tabs are gone.
There's no built-in way to:
- Save a named session and come back to it later
- Switch between different "contexts" (work tabs, personal tabs, project tabs)
- See which tabs you had open last Tuesday
What I use: Tab Manager & Session Saver
I found Tab Manager & Session Saver on Firefox Add-ons a few weeks ago and it solved all of this.
Here's how it works:
1. Save your current session with one click
Hit the extension icon → "Save Session" → give it a name. Done. All your tabs are saved, even if Firefox crashes, restarts, or you accidentally close the window.
2. Restore any saved session
Open the extension → pick a saved session → click Restore. All your tabs come back exactly as they were.
3. Switch between project contexts
I keep separate sessions for:
- "Research" (academic articles, Wikipedia tabs)
- "Work" (dashboards, Slack, email)
- "Side project" (GitHub, docs, tutorials)
Switching between them takes 2 clicks. No more hunting through browser history.
4. Crash protection
The extension auto-saves your session periodically. So even if your computer dies in the middle of a session, you can recover everything when you come back.
Who is this for?
If you use Firefox and any of these sounds familiar, you need this:
- You're a student juggling multiple research papers at once
- You're a remote worker who switches between 3+ projects in a day
- You've ever lost tabs and had to dig through browser history to find them
- You keep "temporarily" opening tabs you mean to close but never do
Install it free
