not to be cynical, but I don't think F1 pistons are a good metaphor for your story. F1 cars break ALL the time, even though they have years of development and months of preparing for the new season. They go through parts like no one's business, nothing can be built perfectly, hence why aircraft have several layers of fail-safes because if something breaks in the air, you need the plane to still be functional.
