Erm Well I mean So... why doesn't DEV just auto set the theme to dark? 🤔. Could DEV.to team let me know and you all just speculate ...

While I agree with you in terms of preference for dark mode, keep in mind that:

  • Our understanding of Dark Mode is relatively new and we're still early in the studies of its benefits. As developers, we're on the front lines and it feels like a no-brainer to us, but that same level of understanding may not be as prevalent in other roles related to a product like this: Designers, Product Manager, etc.
  • If you start brand new HTML document with no CSS, it renders white. Cleary, Dev.to isn't a bare-bones product, but default behaviors do have an influence on decisions.
  • Any business has a list of competing priorities, and Forem/Dev.to is no exception. It's quite possible that it's already been identified, but there are more important parts of the product that need attention today.
