Wong Woon Thiam on Professional Capital Allocation Analysis

Good cash flow tells me that a business has resources to work with. The next question is how those resources are being used.

Management may reinvest in operations, repay debt, buy another company, pay dividends, or repurchase shares. Each choice can make sense under the right conditions.

I think professional financial analysis should separate the decision from the outcome we hope to see.

If capital is being reinvested, I look at whether returns are improving. If an acquisition is made, I want to understand the price paid and what the business is expected to gain. With buybacks, I also care about valuation.
The same action can be sensible for one company and poor for another.

That is why I prefer to judge capital allocation alongside cash flow, balance-sheet strength, expected returns, and the alternatives management had at the time.
