Gemini Pinned Chats Disappearing? A Google Workspace Troubleshooting Guide

Google Gemini users are encountering a persistent and frustrating problem: their carefully pinned conversations are inexplicably vanishing from the sidebar. These disappearing chats frequently become uneditable, appearing "locked." This issue, which is especially common for accounts with extensive chat histories, suggests significant server-side synchronization difficulties within Google's backend infrastructure.

The Disappearing Act: Gemini Pinned Chats Become Unpinned and Unresponsive

The central problem unfolds in two distinct phases. First, users observe that many of their previously pinned chats disappear from the left sidebar, as if they were automatically unpinned. Although the actual chat history remains accessible through direct URLs, the vital "pin" status metadata fails to load or synchronize properly with the web interface. This is not a new occurrence; similar reports surfaced in February 2026, pointing to an ongoing server-side synchronization or timeout bug.

Beyond the UI: When Chats Become "Locked" and Uneditable

A more severe symptom appears when users try to engage with these "missing" conversations. Opening them through direct URLs and then attempting to rename them or submit new prompts frequently leads to an infinite loading state. Following a forced page refresh, the attempted action is not saved, the chat title resets to the generic "Google Gemini," and the conversation still does not reappear in the recent chats sidebar. This suggests the problem is more than just a user interface rendering flaw; it's a backend state management issue where specific chat sessions seem "locked" or corrupted, preventing any modifications. One user, for instance, reported over 26 such sessions stuck in a read-only condition.

Why is This Happening? Unpacking the Backend Challenges

Both experts and affected users hypothesize that the fundamental cause stems from server-side synchronization failures, timeouts, or database deadlocks. Accounts possessing a very extensive chat history, potentially spanning over a year (for instance, dating back to summer 2025), appear particularly vulnerable. This significant volume of data can overburden backend systems, resulting in failures when trying to retrieve or update chat metadata. Much like managing considerable google drive data usage can strain cloud storage resources, a massive chat history within Gemini can severely challenge its backend synchronization services. The issue frequently recurs across various browsers and network environments, further solidifying its identification as a server-side problem.
