Hacktoberfest Week 1 DEV Challenge

This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 1: Touch Grass

What I Built

I built trailwhisper, an open-source AI-powered project designed to encourage people to step away from their screens and spend more time in the real world.
Instead of using AI to keep users scrolling, consuming, or interacting with another digital feed, the project uses AI as a bridge between the digital world and real-world activity.

🌲 TrailWhisper: The Zero-Screen Offline Trail Naturalist

Theme Submission: Touch Grass — Build with open-source AI at its core.

TrailWhisper is an ambient, offline bioacoustic companion designed to get you deep into nature without ever looking down at a screen.

How I Built It

The project is built around open-source AI, rather than relying entirely on a closed AI API.The AI layer is responsible for understanding the user's situation and turning it into practical, real-world suggestions. The surrounding application handles the interaction and makes those suggestions actionable.

Why Does Open Innovation Matter?

Open innovation matters because projects like this shouldn't require access to a proprietary AI platform to be possible.Using open-source and open-weight AI gives developers more control over how the system works. We can experiment with different models, run inference locally, modify the behavior, inspect the implementation, and build on top of the work of the wider community. It also makes experimentation more accessible.
