32 English Words With No Vowels (And How to Use Them)

Did you know English has dozens of words that get by without a single vowel? No A, E, I, O, U — just consonants doing all the heavy lifting.

Some are obscure Scrabble plays, others are everyday words you've probably used without noticing. Here's the complete list, grouped by how you'll actually use them.

The Classic: "Rhythm" and "Syzygy"

The most well-known vowel-less words use Y as a vowel substitute:

  • Rhythm — pattern of beats in music or poetry
  • Syzygy — alignment of three celestial bodies (astronomy)
  • Crypt — underground chamber
  • Gypsy — a member of the Romani people
  • Nymph — mythological spirit
  • Myth — traditional story
  • Lymph — bodily fluid
  • Psyche — the human soul or mind

These all use Y as a vowel sound (/ɪ/ or /i/). In Scrabble, Y is worth 4 points — handy when you're stuck with a rack of consonants.

The Short Ones: Two and Three Letter

These are the workhorses — short, common, and game-changers in word games:

  • By — preposition
  • My — possessive
  • Shh — quiet!
  • Hmm — thinking sound
  • Pff — dismissal sound
  • Cwm — bowl-shaped valley (Welsh origin)
  • Fly — insect or verb
  • Try — attempt
  • Why — question word
  • Lynx — wild cat
  • Gym — fitness place
  • Pyx — container for Eucharist bread

"Cwm" and "Pyx" are especially useful for Scrabble players — they're short, high-scoring, and often catch opponents off guard.

The Weird Ones: Interjections and Abbreviations

English has a category of vowel-less words that are just… sounds:

  • Brr — I'm cold
  • Pht — mild expression of annoyance
  • Tsk — disapproval sound
  • Zzz — sleeping (not technically a word, but accepted in some dictionaries)

And some abbreviations that became real words:

  • Mr — Mister
  • Dr — Doctor
  • St — Street or Saint

The Most Powerful Scrabble Words

If you play Scrabble or any word game, these are the vowel-less words you need to memorize:

Word Points Why It Matters
Cwm 10 High score, uses W as vowel
Pyx 15 Three letters, huge points
Nymph 15 Five letters, no vowels
Crypt 12 Common on defense
Hwyl 13 Welsh word meaning "enthusiasm"

How This Helps You

Knowing vowel-less words is a secret weapon:

  1. Scrabble — when your rack is all consonants, you can still make valid plays instead of exchanging tiles
  2. Wordle — if you hit all yellows with no greens, vowel-less words help narrow down the answer
  3. Crosswords — crypt, myth, and lynx appear all the time
