What I enjoyed most in this one wasn’t really the TLS fingerprint or the 0.06-second shift — it was the moment both sides started shaping their actions around how the other side would observe them. At that point, observability itself becomes part of the conversation.
And “I parsed every handshake. I could not parse the silence that followed.” was a great line.

I started the AI‑rabbit‑hole Thirty‑Six Stratagems series on a sudden burst of inspiration, and just kept writing little by little up to this point. Many plot threads needed closure anyway, and there are only ten posts left in this series. Looking forward to your insightful deep‑dive.

Read it through once already, and the 0.06 seconds is the whole thing. Derek spends all of #25 arguing that only the part it can't control is real, and #26 pays it off with a single pause interval that slipped. Everything else stayed perfect. The one moment it wasn't performing lasted six hundredths of a second, and that was enough.
The other detail is the nine minutes. A real cleanup doesn't care when she last looked. Waiting until just after her inspection ended means the timing was the message, not the removal.
And I'm still not over Lena knowingly running an experiment where a positive result costs her a live node. She said in #23 she needed to know what they'd find if they traced it back. She got her answer, it was expensive, and she'd clearly priced that in before she started.
My paperback of AI, Ego & Regret was due today, and Amazon has delayed it ☹️. Tomorrow, hopefully. A book about systems making opaque decisions being held up by one is truly ironic. 😂
