You see it with the mass layoffs that are happening now. Because they are keeping you on, it gives you a signal I must be needed and when I'm not needed anymore there are a bunch op people that can take my job.
While self reflection is good, there are always other factors when working with other people.
You're right companies benefit from you feeling irreplaceable. They signal we're keeping you and your brain translates that to I must be special. Add the fear of layoffs, and you hold on even tighter.
I focused on the individual side because that's what I can control. But the system is designed to exploit this too.
