My friend Mayur finds DBMS difficult because the notes are long, theory-heavy, and overwhelming to revise before exams.
So I built Mayur’s Study Buddy: a small web app that turns long DBMS notes into simpler revision material.
What it does
Mayur can paste a long DBMS paragraph into the app and choose one of two options:
- Explain simply — creates an easy explanation, key revision points, and a real-life example.
- Make a quiz — creates five practice questions with answers.
This makes the same notes less intimidating and gives him a faster way to revise.
How I built it
The project uses:
- HTML for the page structure
- CSS for the design
- JavaScript for the buttons and interaction
- Node.js for a small local server
- Ollama with the
gemma3:4bmodel for AI responses
Why open AI mattered
The AI is the core of this project.
I used the open-weight Gemma model through Ollama, running locally on the computer. That means Mayur’s notes are processed locally instead of being sent to a cloud AI service.
Using a local model also means the project can keep working without a paid AI API and can be changed to use another compatible model later.
What I learned
This is my first Hacktoberfest project. I learned that a useful project does not need to be huge. It can solve one real problem for one real person.
I also learned how to connect a simple website to a local AI model and turn a small idea into a working tool.
Try it yourself
The source code and setup instructions are available on GitHub:
https://github.com/Yadnu14/dbms-study-buddy
To run it locally:
- Install Ollama.
- Run
ollama run gemma3:4b. - In the project folder, run
node server.js. - Open
http://localhost:3000.
Thanks for reading, and good luck
