He warned that slowing AI development could put the United States at risk of losing its competitive advantage over China.
Mike Johnson Rejects Calls to Slow AI Development
Speaking to reporters, Mike Johnson said the United States cannot impose a moratorium on AI development because doing so could cause the country to lose its edge over China, with serious national security implications for American families.
He argued that AI companies should largely be allowed to oversee their own activities.
The US speaker said AI companies can establish their own rules and that the government does not need to tell them to slow down. If companies want to slow their development, they can make that decision themselves.
AI Companies Should Be Allowed to Self-Regulate
Mike Johnson has maintained that Congress should not take the lead in slowing AI development.
At the same time, he has said that safeguards can still be introduced through a balanced approach. He has supported ideas including independent auditors and greater transparency from companies developing AI systems.
Growing Debate Over AI Restrictions
Mike Johnson’s statements come as calls to limit or slow AI development are gaining attention across different parts of the political spectrum.
The debate is linked to concerns about the potential effects of AI on employment, energy costs, and public safety.
Earlier, US Senator Bernie Sanders and former adviser to President Donald Trump and prominent right-wing voice Steve Bannon also called for stronger oversight of AI during an event in Washington.
AI Competition Between the US and China
Johnson’s position places the US-China technology competition at the center of the debate over how quickly AI should develop.
He said that a moratorium on AI development could weaken the United States’ competitive position against China and create national security implications.
Johnson also said AI is expected to be a topic of discussion when President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping meet in Washington later this month.
