OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has said that a safety agreement between the United States and China, the world’s two major rival powers in artificial intelligence, could be deserving of the Nobel Peace Prize.
Sam Altman Proposes Shared AI Safety Principles
In an interview with the US magazine Fortune, Sam Altman said that the United States and China could agree not to take risks beyond a certain limit in the development of artificial intelligence.
Rather than a large and complex agreement, he proposed establishing shared safety principles and common standards for testing artificial intelligence systems.
Sam Altman said that the matter is not difficult and that even a one-page document could be enough for such an agreement.
Competition Can Continue Alongside AI Safety
Sam Altman said that economic and geopolitical competition between the United States and China in the field of artificial intelligence should continue. However, he said that the two countries could establish common principles for technological safety while keeping those principles separate from their competition.
He linked the potential agreement to the Nobel Peace Prize, saying that such an initiative could deserve the peace prize.
Political Aspects of the Proposal
According to international media reports, Sam Altman’s proposal may also have political aspects because US President Donald Trump has himself expressed a desire to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.
It is worth noting that Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to visit the White House on September 24, hosted by Donald Trump.
Expected Trump-Xi Meeting
The planning for Xi Jinping’s visit had already been completed, while Trump’s visit to China, which included a meeting with Xi Jinping, was postponed due to the Iran conflict.
The expected meeting between the two leaders comes as the United States and China continue their economic and geopolitical competition in the field of artificial intelligence.
