Now, U.S. President Donald Trump has offered a very different perspective.
Trump Dismisses Growing AI Concerns
Speaking to reporters at his golf resort in Ireland, Trump said that “very negative forces” are raising concerns about AI and promoting scenarios that he believes will not happen.
Rather than slowing down, Trump emphasized that the United States needs to maintain its leadership in artificial intelligence, particularly in competition with China. He argued that the country that leads in AI will have a major technological advantage.
A Different View From AI Industry Leaders
Trump’s comments come shortly after Dario Amodei argued that AI development should be deliberately paced so that safety measures and testing can keep up with rapidly improving capabilities.
Amodei has warned about increasingly autonomous AI agents and proposed stronger independent evaluations and other safeguards rather than stopping AI development altogether. Sam Altman and Elon Musk have both expressed support for his broader call to pace the development of frontier AI.
AI Safety vs. Technological Competition
This creates an increasingly important debate: should AI development continue at maximum speed to preserve technological leadership, or should companies slow down enough to improve safety and oversight?
