How We Built a URL Shortener That Handles Millions of Redirects

URL shortening seems simple — take a long URL, return a short one, redirect when clicked. But building one that scales reliably is harder than it looks. Here's what we learned.

The Architecture Behind Modern Link Shortening

A production URL shortener needs more than a database and a redirect function. It needs analytics, custom domains, QR code generation, and API access — all while maintaining 99.9% uptime.

Database Design

Every short link maps to a unique slug. The naive approach — auto-increment IDs — works until you need custom aliases. A better design uses a hash-based system with collision detection. The bulk URL shortener approach generates millions of unique slugs efficiently.

Redirect Performance
