Gmail's free 15 GB seems endless until one day it isn't, and Google starts warning that new mail won't arrive.

That space is shared between Gmail, Drive and Photos, so cleaning smart beats deleting randomly. Here's where the gigabytes actually hide.

What you'll need

See what's using the space. Go to one.google.com/storage. The chart breaks usage into Gmail, Drive and Photos. Whichever is biggest gets your attention first.
Delete the big emails. In Gmail's search box type has:attachment larger:10M and search. Those old videos and PowerPoint decks from 2016 add up fast. Select, delete, done.
- Try larger:5M to catch more
- Also search older_than:3y for ancient mail
Empty Spam and Trash. Deleted mail still counts until the trash is emptied. Left sidebar, Trash, then Empty trash now. Same for Spam. People reclaim gigabytes from this alone.
Clean Google Drive. Open drive.google.com, click Storage on the left, and sort by size. Old backups, duplicate phone photos and forgotten video files live here. Right click, Remove.
Review Google Photos. At photos.google.com, the Manage section highlights blurry shots, screenshots and large videos. Screenshots from phones are the silent gigabyte eaters of the cloud world.

After deleting in Drive, empty Drive trash too. Yes, there's a second trash, and yes, it also counts.
Newsletters you never read? Unsubscribe with the link Gmail shows at the top of the message. Fewer incoming MBs every week.
Anything you must keep but rarely open: download it, store it on an external drive, delete the cloud copy.

Don't mass delete 'all mail' in a panic. The searches above target the fat; blind deletion hits memories instead.
Buying storage is fine (it's cheap) but cleaning once a year is still worth it. 100 GB of junk is still junk.

Will deleting emails free space immediately?
Yes, once the trash is emptied. Until then they still count.

Do Google Docs files count?
Native Docs, Sheets and Slides count very little these days. It's the PDFs, photos and videos that matter.
