If your iPhone starts begging for a charger by 4 PM, it's usually not age. It's a handful of settings quietly running around in the background.

These tweaks take ten minutes, cost you nothing you'd miss, and regularly add two or three extra hours of real use.

Pitfalls worth skipping
- Closing apps from the app switcher does not save battery. iOS manages them; force closing just makes the next open slower and hungrier.
- Don't chase 0%. Keeping the charge between roughly 20 and 80 percent keeps the battery healthier long term.
Here's how it works
- Find the battery eaters. Go to Settings, Battery, and scroll. iOS shows exactly which apps drank the most in the last 24 hours and the last 10 days. Anything at the top you barely use is a suspect.
- Tame Background App Refresh. Settings, General, Background App Refresh. Turn it off for apps that don't need to update when you're not looking, like games and shopping apps. Keep it for messaging and maps.
-
Fix Location Services. Settings, Privacy and Security, Location Services. Switch apps from Always to While Using, and turn off Precise Location for apps that just need your city, like weather.
- 'Always' is the silent killer here
- System Services at the bottom can also lose a few toggles
- Lower the screen appetite. In Settings, Display and Brightness, drop Auto Lock to 30 seconds and keep brightness on auto. If your iPhone has ProMotion or an always on display, turning the always on part off helps more than people admit.
- Know Low Power Mode well. Add it to Control Center (Settings, Control Center) so it's one swipe away. Use it from 40% instead of 20% on long days. It pauses background noise with almost no visible difference.

Pro tips without the attitude
- 5G on auto (Settings, Cellular, Voice and Data) stops the modem from hunting for a signal all day in weak coverage areas.
- Mail set to 'Push' polls constantly. Fetching every 30 minutes is a free win for most people.
- Avoid charging in heat. A car dashboard in summer ages a battery faster than two years of normal use.
FAQ
Does dark mode save battery?
A little, on OLED iPhones. It's a nice bonus, not the main fix.
My battery drains overnight while I sleep. Why?
Usually a stuck app or poor signal. Check the Battery screen in the morning; the offender's name will be right there.
