How to Scan Documents With Your iPhone (No Scanner, No App to Install)

Receipts, contracts, grandma's handwritten recipe: somewhere in your house is a scanner shaped like an iPhone, hiding in the Notes app.

The scans come out flat, cropped and PDF ready, good enough for banks and government forms. Here's where Apple hid it.

The fast version

1. Open Notes and start a new note. Any note works. Tap the camera icon in the toolbar (the paperclip on newer iOS) and choose Scan Documents.
2. Point at the paper. The phone finds the document's edges by itself, yellow box around it, then captures automatically. It squares the perspective, so angled shots come out flat and readable.

The thorough version

1. Snap multiple pages in one go. Keep shooting: each page stacks into the same document. Perfect for multi page contracts. Tap Save when done.
   • Drag the corner points if the auto crop guesses wrong
   • Retake replaces any single bad page
2. Export as PDF. Long press the scanned note (or open it and tap share), then Create PDF or share it straight to email/WhatsApp. Recipients get a clean PDF, not a photo of a desk.
3. Alternative: scan directly into Files. Open Files, browse a folder (iCloud Drive works), tap the three dots, Scan Documents. The PDF lands right in that folder, organized from birth.

Pitfalls worth skipping

• Glossy paper glares: tilt the page slightly instead of flash, which washes ink out.
• Scans go to iCloud only if Notes sync is enabled: check Settings, your name, iCloud, Notes before scanning something important.
