Fifteen minutes of 'just scrolling' can quietly burn a gigabyte. TikTok on mobile data is an appetite, not an app.
A built in data saver plus two phone settings tame it without giving up the scroll.

The fast version
- Turn on Data Saver inside TikTok. Profile, three line menu, Settings and privacy, then Data Saver under Cache and Cellular. Videos load at lower resolution and use noticeably less data, with surprisingly little visible difference on a phone screen.
-
Background data is the sneaky part. TikTok preloads the next videos so scrolling feels instant. On Android: Settings, Apps, TikTok, Mobile data, and disable Background data. On iPhone: Settings, TikTok, and turn off Background App Refresh.
- Preloading stops on cellular; WiFi keeps the magic
- Scrolling on mobile data may take a beat longer between videos
The thorough version
- Check how much it's really using. Android: Settings, Network, Data usage, App data usage. iPhone: Settings, Cellular, scroll to TikTok. Seeing '3 GB this month' next to the icon tends to change habits by itself.
- Set a monthly limit as a guardrail. Android lets you cap data with a warning and a hard stop (Network, Data warning and limit). Even without a cap, the warning alone interrupts the trance.
- WiFi assist calls out too. iPhone's WiFi Assist and Android's Adaptive connectivity switch to cellular when WiFi weakens, silently handing your data plan to TikTok in weak signal corners. Turn it off if your plan is small.
Where people go wrong
- Watching in 4G weak signal zones makes the app stream at full rate while stuttering anyway. Worst of both worlds.
- Clearing cache frees storage but doesn't reduce data: Data Saver is the lever for that.

Good habits to keep
- Downloads over WiFi, watch offline later: TikTok supports watching saved drafts offline, and many compilations end up on YouTube where offline downloads exist for Premium.
- Autoplay volume doesn't change data uses: resolution and preloading do. Focus there.
- Check usage monthly with steps above: numbers either confirm the fix or expose the next offender.
Questions people ask
How much data does TikTok use per hour?
Roughly 700 MB to over 1 GB at default quality; Data Saver often halves it.
Will Data Saver ruin video quality?
On a phone screen most people can't reliably tell the difference: try it for a day.
