Not every story is for every follower. Instagram's Close Friends list lets you share with a small circle and nobody else.

Setting it up takes two minutes, and the people on the list are the only ones who know it exists.

Before you start

Open the Close Friends settings. Go to your profile, tap the three line menu, and choose Close Friends under 'Who can see your content'.
Add your people. Search and check the accounts you want. Instagram suggests close connections first, which makes the awkward part easier.
- Nobody gets notified when added or removed
- You can trim the list anytime without drama
Post a Close Friends story. Create a story as usual, then choose the green Close Friends button instead of Your story. It goes only to the list.
Recognize the green ring. Close friends see your story with a green circle. Everyone else sees nothing at all: no story, no hint.

Close Friends also applies to notes in your inbox, handy for small circle updates.
Review the list every few months: friendships, jobs and contexts change.
For one single person, a direct message is still simpler than a list of one.
