For most investors, a bond ETF is the better default: a single fund like BND holds more than 10,000 bonds for a 0.03% expense ratio, trades in one click, and pays income monthly with no maintenance. The one thing it cannot give you is a maturity date — a bond ETF rolls its holdings forever and never hands your principal back on a set day. Individual bonds are the right tool when a defined date and a guaranteed return of face value matter: funding a known future expense, building a retirement income ladder, or locking in a yield you will get regardless of price swings by holding to term. The choice is less about cost than about whether you need certainty on a date or diversification without effort.
“Bonds vs bond ETFs” is one of the most common questions from investors building their first balanced portfolio, and it is usually framed wrong — as if one is safer or cheaper than the other. They mostly hold the same underlying instruments. What differs is the wrapper, and the wrapper changes exactly one thing that matters a great deal to some people and not at all to others: whether there is a day when you get your money back.
What a Bond ETF Actually Is
A bond ETF is a basket of bonds that trades like a stock. Instead of buying one issuer’s debt, you buy a share of thousands of bonds at once. The two dominant total-market funds show how broad that basket is — these are current figures from the issuer fund pages:

The One Real Difference: Maturity
Here is the distinction that actually decides the question. An individual bond has a maturity date: a day on which the issuer repays the bond’s face value. Hold a solid bond to that date and, barring default, you get exactly your principal back plus the interest you were promised, no matter what happened to its price in between. A bond ETF has no such date. It perpetually replaces maturing bonds with new ones to keep a roughly constant average maturity, so there is never a moment when the fund returns your principal — you get whatever the shares are worth when you decide to sell.
That single fact drives everything else. If interest rates rise, both an individual bond and a bond ETF fall in market value, because a fixed coupon is worth less when new bonds pay more. But the individual-bond holder can simply wait for maturity and be made whole; the ETF holder has no maturity to wait for, only a price that may or may not have recovered. When Individual Bonds Are Worth the Effort
There are genuinely good reasons to hold individual bonds, and they all trace back to that maturity date:
- A known future expense. If you need a specific sum on a specific date — a tuition payment, a down payment in three years — a bond maturing then gives you certainty an ETF cannot.
- A bond ladder for income. Staggering individual bonds so one matures each year produces predictable cash flow and steadily reinvests at current rates, which is why retirees often prefer ladders to a single fluctuating fund.
- Treasuries bought direct. US Treasuries purchased through TreasuryDirect carry no expense ratio and no credit risk, making them one case where the individual-bond route is genuinely cheaper than a fund. For nearly everything else — general portfolio ballast, monthly income, corporate or municipal exposure you would struggle to diversify on your own — the ETF wins on cost, convenience, and safety-through-diversification. Do Not Overlook the Costs You Cannot See
The bond ETF’s cost is a visible 0.03% expense ratio. An individual bond’s cost is hidden in the price: a bid-ask spread and a dealer markup that can quietly exceed a fund’s annual fee on a single trade, especially for corporate and municipal bonds that trade infrequently. Ask one question: do I need my principal back on a specific date? If yes — a planned expense, a laddered income stream, a yield you want to lock in and hold — individual bonds earn their extra effort. If no, and you simply want diversified, low-cost, hands-off bond exposure, a total-market bond ETF like BND or AGG does the job for three basis points and never asks you to think about it again.
