Quality Score affects CPC and ad rank. Improving it quickly requires targeting the
most impactful components in the right order.
QS Component Priority Order
Three components, ordered by impact on CPC:
- Expected CTR (most impactful — focus here first)
- Landing Page Experience
- Ad Relevance
Fast Wins for Expected CTR
The asset report (RSA): Identifies "Low" rated headlines immediately.
Remove "Low" assets today. Add new variations.
Headlines with numbers: "7 Ways to Lower Your Google Ads CPA" gets higher CTR than generic copy.
Include the keyword in Headline 1: Google bolds matching terms in SERPs.
Test urgency and benefit framing: "Get Results in 30 Days" vs "Full-Service Management."
Fast Wins for Landing Page Experience
Message match audit: Does the ad promise exactly what's on the landing page?
Disconnect example: Ad says "Free Google Ads Audit." Landing page leads with pricing.
Fix: Match the landing page headline to the ad's offer.
Page speed: Run PageSpeed Insights. Implement the top 3 recommendations.
LCP improvement alone: Often resolves "Below Average" landing page experience rating.
Fast Wins for Ad Relevance
Tighten ad groups: One theme per ad group. Write ad copy for that specific theme only.
If an ad group has 30 loosely related keywords: Split into 5-6 tighter groups.
Each group gets its own tailored ad copy that directly matches the keyword theme.
Timeline for QS Changes
QS updates: Based on accumulated data. Not instant.
After optimizations: Allow 2-4 weeks for QS to reflect changes.
Check: QS components before and after to confirm improvement direction.
