Google Search Console is reporting position improvements for many sites in 2026 while organic traffic stays flat. The reason is a structural issue in how GSC attributes rankings when AI Overviews are active.
The Core Problem
When a query triggers an AI Overview, every URL cited inside the AI block is recorded in GSC Performance at position 1 — regardless of actual organic ranking.
A page at position 9 in organic results that also appears in an AI Overview shows as position 1 in GSC Performance data.
AI Overviews appear in 47-64% of US Google queries in 2026. For sites with content cited in AI Overviews, a large portion of GSC position data reflects AI citations, not organic rankings.
Three Misleading Patterns
Pattern 1 — Impressions up, CTR down: The page is cited in AI Overview. Users get the answer without clicking. GSC shows high impressions, low CTR. This looks like a content problem — it is not.
Pattern 2 — Position 1, low traffic: AI citation records as position 1. Average position 1.2 with 60 clicks/month is not unusual when a query is dominated by AI Overview.
Pattern 3 — Position improved, traffic flat: More AI citations push average position up. Revenue does not follow. Both are true simultaneously.
What to Measure Instead
- Absolute clicks per page per month (not average position)
- Total organic sessions from GA4
- Filter GSC for queries with 500+ impressions and CTR below 0.5% — these are your AI-dominated queries, track separately
