I recently added Find & Replace to YuHex, my independently developed hex editor for Windows.
But I wanted to do things a little differently.
Why I Built It This Way
I've never really liked how some editors handle replacement.
Replacing data one match at a time, or using "Replace All" without reviewing every match first, never felt quite right to me.
So I asked myself:
What should a replacement feature really look like?
After thinking it through, I came up with a different approach.
See Everything Before Changing Anything
My approach is simple:
- Find all matches first.
- Display every match in a list.
- Let users choose exactly which matches to replace.
- Apply only the selected replacements.
No blind replacements. No unexpected changes.
See all matches first. Choose what to replace. Stay in control.

The Freedom of Indie Development
One of the things I enjoy most about independent software development is the freedom to question familiar designs.
Just because a feature has worked a certain way for years doesn't mean it's the best approach for everyone.
Sometimes, a small change in how a feature works can make a big difference in usability.
What Do You Think?
Do you prefer traditional Find & Replace, or would you rather review all matches before deciding what to replace?
I'd love to hear your thoughts!
