  3. CA (Consistency and Availability):

    • In a CA system, the key-value store provides consistency and availability but cannot tolerate network partitions. Since network partitions are inevitable in distributed systems, a pure CA system is impractical for real-world applications.
    • Example: Theoretically, if a system could assume that network partitions never occur, it could ensure that all nodes are always consistent and available. However, since partitions are unavoidable, CA systems are not viable in distributed environments.

Replication

Failure Detection

In a distributed system, failure detection is not as simple as one server declaring another server as down. This is because network partitions, temporary network failures, or delays could mistakenly lead one node to believe another node is down when it is not. Therefore, failure detection typically requires confirmation from multiple independent sources.

Gossip Protocol is a decentralized method often used for failure detection. It operates as follows:

  1. Node Membership List: Each node maintains a list of other nodes in the system, along with their unique IDs and heartbeat counters.
  2. Heartbeat Updates: Each node periodically increments its heartbeat counter.
  3. Propagating Heartbeats: Nodes periodically send heartbeats to a randomly selected set of nodes. These heartbeats are then further propagated to other nodes, ensuring that updates are disseminated throughout the system.
