Bots are computer programs posing as people. They can amplify the effect of trolls by engaging or liking their content en masse, or by posting their own content in an automated fashion. They will get more sophisticated and harder to detect in the future.
Some social media platforms are less vulnerable to bots than others. Facebook for one will put you through a Recaptcha and force you to verify an SMS message if it thinks you're a bot liking or posting en masse.
Twitter might be like that too but I'm not sure.
