After my first contact with a computer in the 1980's, I taught myself to program in BASIC and Z80 assembler. I went on to study Computer Science and have enjoyed a long career in Software Engineering.
Although this sounds rather like telling you to "hit the books" it is worth checking over what MDN has to offer. I continue to find it a vital authoritative source of reference. They also have a very good learning resource. Another good learning resource is SCRIMBA much of it free. If you have any questions please email me (see my profile.)
