Why This Is 2012 Shopify Apps All Over Again
In 2012, Shopify opened their app store. Early developers who built simple apps (abandoned cart recovery, email popups, product reviews) built six and seven-figure businesses. The apps were not complex - they just solved one specific problem well.
MCP is at the exact same stage right now:
- Platform is exploding - Claude, Cursor, and dozens of AI tools now support MCP
- Ecosystem is young - Most servers are hobby projects, not products
- Demand is real - Companies are actively paying for production MCP servers
- Barrier is low - A functional MCP server can be built in a weekend
What Sells Right Now
Based on marketplace activity and freelance demand:
- E-commerce MCPs - Shopify, WooCommerce data access for AI
- Business Tool MCPs - Google Sheets, CRM, email integration
- Data MCPs - Database querying, CSV/JSON analysis
- Content MCPs - SEO analysis, content generation pipelines
- Web Tool MCPs - Scraping, research, data extraction
How to Monetize
Three paths I am seeing work:
Path 1: List on Marketplaces (Passive)

- Set at $19-49 per server
- Organic discovery from developers searching for tools
Path 2: Sell on Gumroad (Semi-Passive)
- Package MCP servers as digital products
- Write tutorials -> link to Gumroad
- One dev.to article can drive consistent traffic for months
Path 3: Custom Development (Active, High Ticket)
- Build custom MCP servers for companies
- $1,000-3,000 per project
- Monthly maintenance retainers $500-1,500
What I Built
I put this theory to the test and built 3 production MCP servers in a weekend:

- Data Analysis MCP - CSV/JSON analysis, business metrics, anomaly detection
- Content Tools MCP - SEO analysis, content briefs, headline optimization

The Window
Like any platform gold rush, the window will not stay open forever. The Shopify App Store now has 8,000+ apps and it is much harder to stand out. MCP marketplaces have 10,000+ servers but only a handful are actually good, documented, and maintained products.
The difference between "10,000 servers" and "10,000 products" is: documentation, support, updates, and a buy button.
That is the opportunity.
