A small habit that helps me avoid unit mistakes

I didn’t realize how often unit mistakes happen until I started reviewing other people’s work more regularly.

The numbers are usually correct. The problem is that the unit context isn’t always obvious, especially in notes or older documents where assumptions were never written down.

What works for me is doing one quick conversion before trusting anything. Not everything — just one value to confirm that I’m reading the scale correctly. It takes a few seconds and saves much more time later.

If I’m already in the browser, I sometimes use something simple like https://mmtocm.net
for that quick check. After that, I rely on judgment rather than repeatedly converting every number.

It’s a small habit, but it prevents a lot of unnecessary backtracking.
