Node.js security releases are planned for October 21: prepare the update path

Node.js plans security releases for the 26.x, 24.x and 22.x lines on or shortly after October 21, 2026. The preannouncement lists HIGH as the highest severity for each line. This is an upcoming release, not a notice that patched versions are already available. Official preannouncement.

The useful work before publication is to make the update path short and verifiable.

Inventory the runtime you actually execute

Run node --version in each relevant environment and record where its version comes from. A developer shell, CI runner and deployed container can have different runtimes. Checking only the workstation leaves the deployment question unanswered.

For each service, write down an owner, runtime line, build location and release mechanism. Keep unknown values visible rather than filling them from memory.

Prepare a small validation plan

Choose checks that exercise your application's important boundaries. For a fictional file-import service, those might be startup, one accepted upload, one rejected upload and a downstream integration call. Your service may need different checks.

Record the currently deployed artifact and how to replace it if the update fails. Decide who can approve the rollout and who will inspect the result. These are preparation steps, not a reason to delay an available fix indefinitely.

Use the final advisory for the final decision

When the release arrives, re-read the official advisory, select the patched version for your supported line, rebuild the actual deployment artifact and record the version running after rollout.

Do not invent patched version numbers or exploit details from the preannouncement. The date gives a planning window; the published advisory and your deployment evidence establish what was fixed and what is running.
