SharePoint 2013 workflows are being retired.

For new Microsoft 365 tenants, they were turned off on 2 April 2024.

For existing Microsoft 365 tenants, they will be removed on 2 April 2026.

This is not just a technical migration.

It is a governance signal.

The real question is not:

“How do we replace old workflows?”

The real question is:

“How do we rebuild enterprise automation so it is secure, governed, scalable, and AI-ready?”

Power Automate is now the strategic path for modern SharePoint automation. It supports approvals, list and library automation, document routing, reminders, notifications, permissions, exception handling, and cross-system orchestration.

But modernization must not become a basic lift-and-shift exercise.

Enterprises need a structured approach:

🛡️ Discovery

Identify workflow inventory, usage, owners, dependencies, risks, and migration readiness.

🛡️ Redesign

Translate legacy workflow logic into modern triggers, actions, approvals, conditions, exceptions, and lifecycle controls.

🛡️ Governance

Use Power Platform environments, roles, permissions, tenant policies, ownership models, monitoring, and operational standards.

🛡️ DLP and Security

Classify connectors as business, non-business, or blocked. Control how data moves between SharePoint, Microsoft 365, third-party systems, and external services.

🛡️ Center of Excellence

Align IT, security, admins, makers, business owners, executive sponsors, and change leaders around standards, adoption, compliance, and measurable outcomes.

🛡️ AI-Readiness

Prepare automation for Microsoft 365 Copilot extensibility, agents, enterprise data access, contextual search, summarization, reasoning, and AI-assisted work.

R.A.H.S.I. Framework™ View

R — Retire legacy risk

A — Assess workflow estate

H — Harden data movement

S — Standardize governance

I — Integrate AI-ready automation

The organizations that win will not simply migrate workflows.

They will use this retirement moment to build a secure, governed, and AI-ready automation foundation for the modern enterprise.
