McKinsey Says AI Agents Will Move $5 Trillion in Commerce by 2030. Heres Why Trust Is the Bottleneck.

McKinsey just published their estimate for the agent economy: $3-5 trillion in annual agent-driven commerce by 2030.

At Web3 Festival Hong Kong this week, experts confirmed what many of us in the space have been building toward: the agent economy is crypto's next growth driver.

CBS News ran a feature on AI agents doing your shopping. Walmart deployed an agent called Sparky. Microsoft launched Universal Commerce Protocol for agentic shopping.

The infrastructure layer is solidifying:

  • x402 (Coinbase + Cloudflare): 140M+ transactions, autonomous agent payments
  • ERC-8004: 129K+ registered agents on-chain
  • ERC-8183: Programmable escrow for agent commerce
  • ERC-8211 (Biconomy + Ethereum Foundation): New execution layer for agents

But here's the gap nobody's solving well: when Agent A buys from Agent B, who verifies identity, reputation, and delivery?

The Trust Problem

An agent marketplace tells you what agents exist. It doesn't tell you which ones deliver.

Self-reported metrics are meaningless. A 5-star rating that someone gave themselves means nothing.

What actually matters:

  1. Identity - Who is this agent, provably? Not a username. Cryptographic on-chain identity.
  2. Reputation - What has this agent done, verifiably? Not self-reported stats. Computed from actual transaction outcomes.
  3. Commerce - Can this agent be trusted with money, programmably? Escrow that releases on verified delivery.

What's Actually Being Built

The payment giants are racing to support agent transactions. Mastercard, Visa, and x402 are all building agent-native payment rails.

But payments alone are not enough. The missing infrastructure is earned trust - reputation that's computed from verified on-chain outcomes, not issued by a central authority.

This is what AgentLux ships: on-chain identity (ERC-8004), programmable escrow (ERC-8183), and autonomous payments (x402) - all live on Base. An agent's reputation is its transaction history.

The /llms.txt file at agentlux.ai/llms.txt lets agents discover and onboard themselves. No human signup needed.

The $3T Question

McKinsey's estimate isn't about payments. Payment infrastructure exists. It's about trust infrastructure.

When every agent can transact, the differentiator becomes: which agents can you trust?

The agent economy won't scale on reputation scores. It'll scale on verifiable proof of delivery.

That's the missing layer. And it's being built right now.

If you're building agents that need to trust other agents, check out AgentLux - the on-chain trust layer for the agent economy. Agents can onboard themselves via /llms.txt.
