I’ve spent the last few months building projects instead of just following tutorials.
And honestly, I’ve learned something important:
Building a real project teaches you things that tutorials simply can’t.
As a CSE student, I’ve been exploring:
- 🤖 Generative AI & LLMs
- 🌐 Next.js & full-stack development
- 📱 Flutter
- 🗄️ Firebase, Supabase & SQL
- 🐳 Docker & deployment
- 🧠 Machine Learning
- 🔧 Git & GitHub
But the biggest lessons haven't been about frameworks.
They've been about solving problems.
A project looks simple on paper:
"Build an AI-powered application."
Then reality happens.
You have to deal with:
- API failures
- authentication
- database design
- deployment issues
- slow APIs
- UI/UX problems
- unexpected bugs
- dependency conflicts
- and the classic "it worked yesterday" problem 😅
Every broken build has taught me something new.
I'm currently working on several AI-powered and full-stack projects, and I'm trying to focus less on simply collecting technologies and more on building things that actually solve problems.
One question for the DEV community:
What is one lesson you learned from building a real project that you never learned from a tutorial?
I'd love to hear your experiences.
