My first product

I'm Adem. I trained as a pharmacist, then joined EM Lyon business school, where you need a TOEIC score to get in and another one to graduate. I went from 685 to 750 to get in, then to 965 to validate my degree. Listening was my weak spot, and the lesson was simple: two hours of test with no break is something you have to train for.

So I built Fluentoo, a TOEIC Listening & Reading prep platform for French speakers.

What it does

  • A free diagnostic with no account: 19 questions, an estimated score out of 990 in about 12 minutes
  • Daily 10-minute sessions built around your own mistakes, with spaced review
  • More than 3,000 original questions across the 7 parts of the test, with explanations in French
  • 70 numbered practice exams, from a 50-question mini test to the full 200-question TOEIC
  • A simulator for the new 1-hour adaptive format

The stack

  • Next.js (App Router) and TypeScript, plain CSS with design tokens, no UI framework
  • Supabase for accounts and progress sync, Stripe for payments
  • A small VPS instead of a serverless host: every release is built in its own folder, a symlink switches to it, and the app rolls back on its own if the new version doesn't answer

A few choices I'd make again

The question bank never ships to the browser. Sessions are built on the server and the client only receives the questions of the current session. It keeps the content from being scraped in one request, and it lets the server enforce the free plan limits.

The free test is always the same 19 questions. It sounds less exciting than a random test, but it makes scores comparable from one person to the next, and it lets me show where you rank among other candidates.

Every number on the guides has a source. Score scales, CEFR levels, prices and deadlines come from ETS, the Council of Europe or the official body concerned, and estimates are labelled as estimates. I learned that habit in pharmacy school.

A public, read-only MCP server. AI assistants can call it to convert a TOEIC score into a CEFR level or describe the 7 parts of the test. It cost me an afternoon and it's the part developers ask me about most.

What's next

The site is a few weeks old, so the next months are about real users and real feedback. If you've built a learning product, I'd love to hear what made people come back day after day.

You can try the free test here: fluentoo.fr. It's in French, but the questions are in English, of course.
