Week 1 Challange

This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 1: Touch Grass

What I Built

I built Drona AI, an AI-powered learning assistant that helps students learn through the Socratic method.

Instead of simply giving users the answer, Drona teaches by asking questions, guiding the learner step-by-step, providing hints when they are stuck, and checking their understanding.

Drona can also generate assignments and tests based on the topic being learned, helping users practice what they learn and evaluate their knowledge.

The goal is to make learning more active and intentional. Users can learn a concept, solve an assignment, take a test, identify their weak areas, and then step away from the screen with a clear learning outcome.

Drona is built primarily for students and self-learners who want an interactive AI tutor rather than a simple question-answering chatbot.

How I Built It

Drona AI is an individual project built around an AI-powered Socratic teaching approach.

The AI is designed to act as a tutor rather than simply an answer generator. The learning flow allows Drona to:

  • Teach concepts interactively
  • Ask Socratic questions
  • Evaluate the learner's responses
  • Provide hints instead of immediately revealing answers
  • Give explanations when the learner struggles
  • Generate assignments
  • Generate tests and quizzes
  • Evaluate understanding and identify weak areas

The project uses open-source AI as part of the learning workflow, with the AI integrated into the teaching, assignment, and assessment experience.

The main idea was to build an AI system that encourages users to think, reason, and solve problems themselves rather than becoming dependent on AI-generated answers.

Why Does Open Innovation Matter?

Open innovation makes it possible to experiment with AI systems and educational workflows without being completely dependent on a single closed AI provider.

For Drona, the important part isn't only the AI model. It is how the AI is used to create a Socratic learning experience.

Open-source AI makes it possible to experiment with different models, prompts, teaching strategies, and workflows, and to build an educational system that can be customized around the learner.

With a closed API, the AI could simply answer a student's question. With an open approach, I can focus on building the complete learning experience around the model — from teaching and questioning to assignments and testing.
