Short version: you can absolutely start with a free Codex pet. The free tier is a real product tier, not a teaser. The Starter plan generates and installs your first pixel pet; Pro just opens up quotas, resolution and advanced options.

What the free plan includes

Upload a photo (JPG, PNG or WebP), get a pixel pet with spritesheet.webp plus pet.json, ready to drop into ~/.codex/pets. Basic animation states (4-direction walk, idle, jump) are included. The pet is yours permanently, no subscription needed to keep it, no watermark, no expiry.

Where the limits actually are

The differences come down to: generation quota (Starter has a base allowance that resets on a cycle), output resolution (standard vs higher), advanced customization (basic animation states vs more states and detail control), and batch generation (single vs batch).

One thing people keep assuming that is not true: free pets do not expire and do not carry watermarks. The quota resets; the pets you already generated are permanent.

Making your first pet in 5 steps

  1. Pick a front-facing photo with even lighting
  2. Upload it and pick a pixelation strength (default is usually fine)
  3. Preview the animation, download the ZIP
  4. Unzip into ~/.codex/pets
  5. Reload Codex, pet appears on the desktop

When Pro is worth it

Three signals: you iterate on the same pet with multiple color schemes and hit the quota, you need higher resolution for avatars or print, or you want to batch-generate for a whole team. For one pet to test the waters, Starter is plenty.
