To restore faded photos well you first have to know which kind of damage you are looking at, because sun and the heat that travels with it attack a print in two separate ways. Light bleaches the dyes.
Four kinds of fade, and what each one means. Hold the print up to a window rather than a lamp, since a lamp flatters it. What you see falls into one of these.
What comes back and what does not. Fade removes density, not information, and that single sentence is most of the job. Where the dye has lightened but the silver or the dye cloud is still there in some quantity, a scanner with enough bit depth can pull the missing range back out of the shadows.
Order of work. The order does more than the tool. Follow it and most problems show up before they cost you anything.
When to stop and send it to a person. Stop when the work stops being recovery and becomes invention. A print where half a face has lifted needs someone to decide what belonged there, and a model fills it with something statistically average, which on a face is worse than leaving the gap visible.
