Italians call a public holiday a "red day" (giorno rosso) because holidays are printed in red on the calendar. Understanding Italy's holidays means understanding two buckets: civil holidays like New Year and Labour Day, and religious ones like Assumption and Christmas. The religious ones make up more than half of the national list, which is the most distinctive feature of the Italian calendar.
The 12 national red days in 2026
The full list: Jan 1, Jan 6 (Epiphany), Apr 5 (Easter Sunday), Apr 6 (Easter Monday), Apr 25 (Liberation Day), May 1 (Labour Day), Jun 2 (Republic Day), Aug 15 (Assumption), Nov 1 (All Saints), Dec 8 (Immaculate Conception), Dec 25 and Dec 26.
Unlike Germany or Spain, Italy keeps regional variation small. Only a handful of cities add a local patron saint's day, such as Rome's June 29. For planning purposes, one national calendar works almost everywhere.
The bridge opportunities
2026 is a good year for Italian bridge days. Jan 6 falls on a Tuesday, so taking Jan 5 off makes a four-day weekend. Jun 2 lands on Tuesday the same way. Dec 8 is a Tuesday, which combined with weekends and Christmas turns December into two long stretches.
Ferragosto and Easter: the holidays that move the country
August 15, the Assumption, is simply called Ferragosto. It is the day Italy genuinely shuts down: cities empty, the coast fills, and many small restaurants serve lunch only for the whole month. For visitors, August is the hardest month to book a good table or a reasonable hotel.
Easter is movable. In 2026 it lands on April 5, with Pasquetta on April 6. Holy Week in Rome and Sicily behaves less like a public holiday and more like a cultural event.
Advice for visitors and remote workers
For visitors: late April through early June forms a holiday cluster, so museums queue hard. August is high season across the board. For remote workers: from December 8 through January 6 the country runs on a de facto Christmas break, and business emails get answered slowly. Do not set deadlines that depend on Italian colleagues during that stretch.
