Free restoration tools fall into three groups and only one of them is worth your afternoon. Free preview with a paid export tells you whether a photo is salvageable at all. Genuinely free processing does the work. Free trials expire in the middle of your project.
What actually works, in order: Test one damaged photo end to end before committing to a tool, judge the exported file rather than the preview, and keep the original scan untouched so a second attempt never costs you detail.
The numbers worth knowing: Three limits show up again and again: a cap on export resolution, a watermark on download, and a daily or per-batch count. Each one has a workaround that does not involve paying.
Where people go wrong: Judging the result by the preview. Previews often render at a larger effective resolution than the free export, so the file you download looks softer than the one you approved.
A note on defaults. Every tool in this space ships with settings chosen for the average case, and if your situation is not average, the default path is what sends you back to redo the work a month later.
