Reduce Eye Strain with Codex Skin Settings. Six hours into a refactor, and the file on screen is identical to the one you opened at 9 AM. Your eyes disagree.
Where Codex eye strain actually comes from. Dark versus light gets all the attention and settles nothing. Both camps contain comfortable setups and miserable ones, and the deciding factor is almost never the base hue.
Codex brightness settings worth changing. Most people inherit their defaults and never revisit them. These are the ones where a change is actually measurable:
| Setting | What you usually inherit | Target for a long session | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|---|
| Background luminance |
#000000 or #FFFFFF
|
#141420-#1F1F2B dark / #E8EEF4 light |
Pure black makes bright text bloom; pure white behaves like a lamp in a dim room |
| Text-to-background contrast | 18:1 - 21:1 | 8:1 - 12:1 | Past roughly 12:1 the extra contrast adds glare without adding legibility |
| Accent saturation | 90-100% | 45-60% | Highly saturated blocks pull attention away from the characters you are reading |
| Sidebar vs editor delta | Distinct, high contrast | Within about 10% luminance | Keeps the pupil settled as your gaze moves between panes |
| OS display brightness | Whatever it was yesterday | Matched to the room | No skin can compensate for a display fighting its environment |
A brightness number only means something relative to the room it sits in.
Reduce blue light without killing syntax colours. The reflex is to warm every colour in the palette. That works briefly, right up to the moment you need to tell a string literal from a keyword.
The part worth keeping: In a dim room, yes. Full write-up is on the source blog.
