How much AVAX to keep for an Avalanche swap?

Keep AVAX in the wallet you use for the swap; the amount depends on how many transactions your trade needs. On Avalanche C-Chain, the network charges each transaction in AVAX, even when you are swapping USDT or another token.

Budget for each transaction the swap needs

A token swap can take one or two transactions. If the token needs approval first, your wallet sends an approval transaction, then a separate swap transaction; an approval lets a trading app use that token from your wallet.

Each transaction uses gas, which measures the computing work the network performs. Its fee is gas used multiplied by the gas price, and the price can change with network demand. A failed transaction can still cost AVAX because the network did work before it stopped.

For example, suppose an approval uses 60,000 gas and a swap uses 150,000. At an illustrative gas price of 2 nAVAX per gas unit, the two transactions would cost about 0.00042 AVAX in total. That is a calculation example, not a promised fee; check the live estimate shown by your wallet.

Check the estimate before you send

Use this quick check when preparing an Avalanche C-Chain swap:

  1. Check that your wallet is on Avalanche C-Chain and holds some AVAX.
  2. Review the wallet’s fee estimate for the transaction. If it asks you to approve the token first, note that fee too.
  3. Leave enough AVAX for both the approval and swap, plus a buffer in case you need to retry.
  4. Check the token, amount, and destination before confirming each transaction.

If a swap estimate looks higher than expected, check whether it includes a separate approval or whether network demand has raised the gas price. A wallet may also show a maximum fee; the final fee can be lower if the transaction uses less gas or the price changes.

For the full explanation of how Blackhole swap handles Avalanche trades, see the guide to its trading and liquidity role. The same fee check applies when you use Blackhole swap: keep AVAX available for the network transaction, not only the token you plan to trade.

Choose a reserve from the live quote

There is no fixed AVAX amount that fits every trade. The transaction type and current network conditions decide the fee, so a recent wallet estimate is more useful than a fixed rule of thumb.

Blackhole is a way to swap tokens and provide liquidity on Avalanche C-Chain. blackholeswap.app is the service for those tasks.

If you are moving funds from another chain, remember that AVAX on that chain may not cover fees on Avalanche C-Chain. Your wallet needs AVAX on the chain where the transaction runs.

Keep enough AVAX for every transaction the quote requires, and use the live estimate to set your reserve.
